The Little Albatross
2018, High School, Art
The albatross symbolizes purity, but because of our disastrous impact on the environment, we have tarnished this image of purity, and it is our burden to bear. This paper-maché vessel was made to look like a fallen bird; when its wings are lifted, you are able to access the heart book that serves as a memory capsule that tries to impart a lesson for humanity. This book engages the reader by detailing small, everyday things that they can do to help save the planet (like recycling)--but when you open the flaps in the pages, they recite a more sinister truth (like how only about 10% of plastic is recycled). The world doesn't need small actions, it needs monumental change--and fast. The poem format looks to the Lorax (which is also a cautionary tale about taking care of the environment ) to be more intriguing and easier to understand. Some samples of the text behind the flap: "Chemicals are already glumping the pond where the fishes hum! No more can they hum, for their gills are all gummed. OH! Their future is dreary... they'll walk on their fins and get woefully weary… in search of some water that isn't so smeary. " Another sample: “Your discomfort is appreciated... a great step forward so to speak! but the ice caps are melting...and stay melting... Soon, there'll be no ice, no polar bears, and no knees to tweak” Like the Lorax, this dead bird and its remains serves as a messenger to future and current generations.
