Ocean Pollution
Cassandra Hubler

Debris swept from rivers to ocean

Trash swirling in the sea

Rubbish from pipes to salt water

Cans, plastic bags, and fishing nets

scattered around the sea,

like toys in a crowded room

Turtles eating plastic bags

Whales and fish stuck in rusty fishing nets

Birds captured in floating soda rings

Glass bottles become jagged and dangerous

to all the curious animals at the beach,

suffering from human carelessness

Plastic discarded by people,

unaware of the danger it might cause

swallowed by sea animals,

so carefree and naive,

that are harmed by sickness,

or maybe even death

So let’s all help these innocent animals

by not letting anything dangerous

hit the glass-like surface of the huge, deep sea

Don’t throw waste, or any other thing into rivers or streams

for someday it will find its way

to the beautiful sea

If we join together,

we can make a change,

so spread the word

to not dump trash, in water or in sea

because the ocean is more than water,

it is a home,

a home you don’t want to destroy

Reflection

I created this poem because I care for the ocean and all the creatures that live in it. It's sad to think that some people are careless and throw trash into the sea, trash that could kill many animals. The sea is an important thing in our world and it needs someone to fight for it. I want to help the ocean survive and thrive. I thought about the words in my poem for a long time, thinking how they can all go together and form a poem. It took time and a lot of patience to come up with a final product that would speak for the ocean. It is so important not to take what we have for granted, and sometimes we do that with the ocean and it's animals. We need to all pitch in to help with ocean pollution, and this poem is a way I can help and spread the word.
