Throughout this art contest, my research has led me to the conclusion that major causes of climate change (that have affected the blue planet and ground environments alike) are toxic emissions from corporate factories. Over 70% of global gases that rise temperatures and pH levels in the ocean are due to businesses that value money at the expense of the environment. Using this and the minimalist sculptures of Richard Serra as inspiration, I drew a man with smoke stacks on his shoulders, representing commercial, polluting businesses. The man is blinded by flowers and money, symbolizing temporary pleasures and false safety that prevents corporations and regular people from facing climate change—something that prevents people from opening their eyes. In addition, the faint outline of fish and turtles floating from threatening tendrils of smoke are the warning spirits of deceased organisms that will only increase if we do not slow the climate crisis. I hope viewers of this artwork are not alarmed but inspired by my piece, for seeing the main cause of climate change exposed raw before them enables each person to recognize that restoration is within our grasp. Because I know through research that anyone can make an impact, I will actively participate in projects provided by the Bow Seat and Science Without Borders programs, as well as begin an ocean awareness club in my school to further the environmentalism movement. It is truly amazing that so many diverse people in this generation are gathering for the betterment of our earth, and I hope to continuously be a part of that movement.
