Reflection

This artwork was inspired by the obvious contrast between the serene beauty of nature in frames and the chaotic turmoil of environmental degradation. I wanted to arouse the audience's alert of both the world's natural wonders we used to have and the urgent environmental challenges we face right now. The central figure in the drawing is a girl looking out a window. The window serves as a metaphorical boundary between the idyllic, colorful world of the girl's room and the stormy, dark ocean scene outside. The girl’s hand pressed against the glass, symbolizes her complicated feeling in the face of the tumultuous sea. To convey this, I used watercolor to create a soft, dreamlike indoor scene, contrasting it with the stark, dramatic waves outside. The room is filled with symbols of nature and life—plants, animals, and a globe—representing a microcosm of the Earth's beauty. This contrast was to highlight the fragility and interconnectedness of our environment. As I worked on the stormy ocean scene, I felt anxious and sad. In the meantime, the bright, detailed elements of the indoor scene brought me moments of joy and hope, reminding me of the beauty worth fighting for. My message to viewers is one of awareness and action. The artwork is a reminder that the pressing environmental crisis might go unnoticed in our daily lives. By depicting a girl, actually it's me, I hope to evoke a sense of responsibility and urgency of my peers. We must act now to protect our planet for our own future. Through this project, I learned about the profound impact of climate change on our oceans and the intricate balance of marine ecosystems. The research process revealed the stark realities of ocean pollution, rising sea levels, and the broader implications of our environmental footprint.
