Reflection
Reflection

The idea of a Climate Hero is one that is often associated with being a person of tremendous impact and reach. While lobbying for change in climate policy or giving speeches to hundreds are very powerful mediums of climate action, there are also much more intimate and equally important forms of inspiring climate action. I wanted to write a poem that explored this idea, that being a Climate Hero doesn't have to mean leading a movement, but could simply mean inspiring those closest to us. The unsung heroes, those who find ways to connect us with the climate, whether they be family members, friends, teachers, or someone else, are oftentimes the pathway to some of the most powerful and meaningful examples of climate action. What I've always found tragic about climate change is the impact that it has on Earth, particularly the plants and animals that have gone extinct or are on the verge of doing so. Another idea that my poem grapples with is that simply asking for forgiveness from and mourning the living beings that have suffered from the repercussions of climate change isn't enough. Rather, forgiveness for what we've already inadvertently inflicted upon the planet can only be achieved by taking meaningful action in combating climate change. I hope that in capturing the audience's attention with a very striking poem, we can recognize the unsung Climate Heroes in our lives while emphasizing the importance of climate action.
