Garb Whale: Garbage Collecting Device
Kaohsiung City, Taiwan
2022, Senior, Interactive & Multimedia
Project Description: My final product is a physical and life-size product consisting of a floating body and a net that can be towed behind a boat. The floating body has two protruding handles on two sides to allow people to have a better hold when using it to collect garbage.
Reflection
When I was young, my dad would take our family out on the ocean. The vast ocean would reflect the beautiful sunset and array of a variety of colors that I have not seen anywhere else. A few years later, I started noticing garbage floating on the ocean constantly. It became so bad that when that same sunset shines on the ocean, the reflection becomes spotted. The ocean habitat was destroyed by the garbage, and sea turtles and dolphins mistook plastic bags for their favorite foods, jellyfish and squids, causing them to choke. It is not fair for marine animals to suffer for the convenience of humans. For these reasons, I wanted to effectively and sustainably mitigate the impacts of human activities on the ocean and create a physical product that can involve more individuals to conveniently participate in ocean clean-up.
