Climate Hero: Oluwaseyi Moejoh, U-recycle Initiative Africa
Reflection
Reflection
This piece is meant to highlight the efforts of Oluwaseyi Moejoh, a 22-year-old environmentalist from Nigeria. Moejoh first began as a climate activist in 2017 when she revived her local high school’s environmental club with a goal to educate her peers on the negative impacts of climate change and find ways to address the issue. As an ambassador for The Neo Child Initiative Africa, she was able to engage over 2,000 of the students at her school in informative sustainability projects. The next year, Moejoh became particularly interested in plastic pollution, a growing problem in Nigeria. When researching this, I learned that the pollution was not only directly harming marine life and littering the streets, but it was also contributing to climate change as decomposing plastic emits greenhouse gases. All of this led Moejoh to found U-recycle Initiative, a youth-led organization that promotes and enforces recycling throughout Africa. The organization has been extremely successful and has even expanded beyond Africa. I believe it is important to recognize young change-makers like Moejoh because it shows that there is hope for the future of the planet and inspires others to take action in the fight against climate change.
