Go Natural
Simone Rankin
Brambleton, VA
2024, Junior, Performing Arts

They say oh my god we keep harmin’ the sea
Take my lead, my dear, and just come with me
I’ll show you the quick way to find the small key
To clearin’ up all that ocean debris
So they go natural
Natural
Natural
Oh oh oh
I’ve never seen anybody harm the ocean like us people
They boo pollution
Pollution
Pollution
Ay ay ay
And when your done I’ll make you remember forever
They say oh my god 1% of plants
Are organic the rest use fertilizer
You know you saw it coming; that small chance
It’ll blow your mind just like a geyser
Ooh I see you, see you, see you every time
And I, I, I, I hate your farmin’
You make me, make me, make me wanna cry
And I keep imagining the all oceans dry
So they go natural
Natural
Natural
Oh oh oh
I’ve never seen anybody harm the ocean like us people
They boo pollution
Pollution
Pollution
Ay ay ay
And when your done I’ll make you remember forever
Remember

Reflection

Writing “Go Natural” to the tune of “Dance Monkey” was a wonderful piece to work on between my piano teacher and I. The positivity of “Dance Monkey” made it the perfect fit for my version, indicating the hope we have for our planet in the future. Honestly, my hope for pollution in our oceans was pretty low until I wrote these lyrics. I learned that - at least trying to - inspire others can actually inspire yourself too. My emotions were quite mixed throughout the creation process: sometimes I got frustrated with the mouthful of lyrics I had to spit out and spent a while figuring out the right fit. Sometimes I would be full of pure joy from just singing “Go Natural” over and over again. After experiencing all of this, though, I realized that this is how we should feel about not just music, but climate change in general. It even motivated me to do more research projects in and out of school on this issue. Evidently, this song has helped me, and hopefully many other people to not just talk about ocean awareness, but to actually make an impact. So go natural and boo pollution!
