Winter Nostalgia
Hong Kong
2024, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word
Missing the cold, no more winter’s embrace,
Coats stay in a forgotten space.
No more winter’s grace, a season untold,
Hot all year around, it takes ahold.
Cool breeze days gone by,
Christmas lacks the joy, the festive high.
Missing the cold, the feeling of delight,
As the cool breeze fades, winter is no longer bright.
Christmas loses its festive allure,
Without its wintery touch, it feels unsure.
We used to snuggle close on the sofa together,
Sipping hot cocoa to warm up in the cold weather.
But now the seas blend in disarray,
Climate change’s toll cannot be delayed.
Hong Kong’s warming is the price we pay,
For a world unbalanced, led astray.
Missing the cold, no more winter’s embrace,
I yearn for a cold winter again, when the breeze caresses my face.
Reflection
Unlike the past, this year’s Christmas was not festive at all in Hong Kong. We were all still in t-shirts under the blazing sun. Besides the Christmas decor everywhere, we did not feel the arrival of December at all. Hence, I decided to focus this poem on describing our longing for the cold winter breeze during the festive season to depict how climate change has impacted Hong Kong. Through my personal experience, I hope to help readers realize the impact of climate change on our everyday lives. After research, I realized there are no longer distinctive differences between the seasons due to global warming. Living in a subtropical region, we experience hot and humid weather almost all season nowadays in Hong Kong. The most obvious evidence is that we would have been in our coats in the past when we celebrated Christmas; however, everyone was still in t-shirts or light garments when last Christmas arrived, which is valid evidence that climate change has drastically impacted us.
