Reflection
This painting was inspired by a camping trip unlike any other I'd ever been on. My friend and I pitched our tent on a small, remote island with no toilets, no cell service, and no man-made amenities. Only sky, fire, trees, and time. Out there, distraction-free, I felt something settle inside of me. My mind grew quiet. Nature didn't ask anything of me; it just whispered, "exist." When I returned to the city, I realized how often I tried to recreate that feeling. A candle on my desk, a fern by the window, a quiet moment after dark, small rituals to remind me of the peace I had discovered. This painting evolved from that duality: the man reflected in two lives, both real and a part of him. The campfire above turns into candlelight below, and the wild fern becomes domesticated. He has not left the forest behind, he carries it with him. I used acrylic and worked in an impressionist style, allowing brushstrokes to blur edges and capture the essence of memory. The painting reminds me of that island: fleeting and vivid at the same time. I've been painting in acrylic for years, drawn to its immediacy and texture, allowing me to construct atmosphere with each layer, as if layering emotion itself upon the canvas. That island, with its silence, wind, and firelight, left an imprint I can't quite name. I see it in how I arrange my desk, how I light a candle at night, and the presence of a fern by my window. These items are more than decorations; they're anchors. I used to think nature was something I had to go to for peace. Now I know it's something I carry. I hope others remember that they can as well.
