Scientists have found that the Japanese Sea reacts to global warming faster than other areas of the world. The temperature and acidity of its waters are growing almost two times faster than in other parts of the world ocean. Because of this, coral reefs are threatened with extinction. Any coral skeleton that is affected by the growing oxidation starts to dissolve. Corals grow weaker, then break and die. Coral reefs are not only beautiful, but also vital to the marine ecosystem because they form complexes of ecosystems, characterized by huge biodiversity. The small reef area is home to a myriad of organisms, including several hundred fish species. They also work as a buffer that protects coastal ocean inhabitants from waves and storms.
