Reflection
Reflection

This piece, titled "Aquas," is a composition which describes a variety of facets relating to oceans. The piece begins with an ascending and descending pattern of supporting harmonies, which rise and fall to evoke images of the sea. This piece is reminiscent of many image based pieces from the impressionist era, which drew inspiration from the ocean, such as Debussy’s “Reflets dans l’eau” and Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau”. However, in reflecting modern concerns regarding our climate and aquatic environments, the melody which is repeated and recontextualized throughout the music is derived from climate data of the seas and terrain from from approximately 1975 to 2000, researched by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Although the music may at first appear serene and relaxing, this connection points to more serious issues which are expressed in the piece. By the end, the piece modulates rapidly, giving a sense of uncertainty, but still holds that not all hope is loss. We may still be able to end on a good note if we choose. This is my first piece that focused on the effects of climate change in our ocean, combining two passions that are dear to me. I believe that this has helped me to grow as an artist, and better understand interdisciplinary possibilities between music and environmental science. By completing this project, I see how awareness for our oceans can be raised in a variety of ways, and that all of us can do our part as caretakers of this planet.
