Death of the Blue Planet
Thomas Carter
Pennington, NJ
2018, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word

Beautiful, creature, but it lives no more
Forever sleep on the ocean floor
Boiling waters, bleached out coral
Nothing and no one
Survives anymore
Could they have stopped it?
So much heat in the air?
I couldn’t tell
Even though I was there
But before I say anything more
Allow me to focus
On an island far
From the shore
To the wonderful creature
I spoke of before
It swam peacefully and gracefully
While eating fish and squid galore
With very few fighting
Until the monsters sailed in
With smoke and great heat
And broiled up their kin
They were called a Vaquita
The smallest porpoise
They were not hunted
Except only by orcas
But greenhouse gases draped
And that was the end
Of the Vaquitas and animals
And humans.

Reflection

I was inspired by a movie playing in the background at the Adventure Aquarium cafeteria in New Jersey. In it, I saw a team of field biologists searching for Vaquitas. All they found was a boiled, rotting corpse of one, who had died in a heat wave. That was when I knew I had to raise awareness of it.
