A Fishy Problem

Reflection

I decided to make my short film with the perspective of animals in mind, specifically sharks. Due to climate change, the migration patterns of countless species of animals are changing. The approach towards vast differences between the seasons impact all of Earth's species. I initially created this short film for Tacoma's Ocean Fest. They too wanted to create a means to communicate the importance of the environment and encourage the public to be more environmentally conscious. A friend of mine recommended I submit the film to this competition as well. I'd say I first got the idea for the film in my environmental science class. In one unit, we talked about the effects of climate change on the seasons; hotter, drier summers, and wetter, colder winters is what is expected within the next 30 years. We looked at the migration of birds, butterflies, and aquatic animals over the past century and saw a correlation with the rise in Earth's temperature and carbon dioxide levels. Another piece of inspiration came from another social issue that is quite prominent in the United States; immigration. With the rise of blatant xenophobia in the country it seemed like a natural inclusive device. Displaced people and displaced animals will both experience great changes in lifestyle.
