Reflection
Many people say mirrors reflect our true selves, which inspired my artwork. The sink and the bathroom mirror represent expectation vs. reality, respectively. The bathroom sink symbolizes our sugarcoated world where everything seems unharmed and working in perfect harmony, and it is not until one looks into the mirror that they can see the true story behind our Earth. In the sink, global warming was never an issue and our world is beautiful, but in the mirror it reflects back to us our society and the result of our constant attack on nature. However, the tiles on the walls inscribed with the names and organizations of environmental advocates provide a glimmer of hope for mother nature. Environmentalists such as Greta Thunberg and Wendell Berry, and organizations like Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Ocean Conservancy strive to return Earth to its original beauty before the beginnings of global warming. We must all come together as a united front and help fight climate change, preventing the story in the mirror from happening. I want this art piece to convey our world’s problems and to remind viewers to reflect on the state of our Earth—and therefore themselves—to see what small changes they can make in their lives to help. After having spent over two weeks on this project, I have gathered ample knowledge about this topic and additionally plan to tweak my lifestyle to help our Earth return to the state in the sink.
