Water shining like crystals, pure as can be
Clownfish darting in and out of sea anemones
A rainbow blanket of coral
Spread out below
But this was what it was like
Now, children are splashing by the sand
Holding water bottles in their hands
The waves roll into the shore
Carrying in garbage
More and more
Bottle caps, plastic bags, and styrofoam float
Toxic gasses killing angelfish from the boats
Creatures swallowing our trash left and right
Plastic wrapped around sea turtles’ necks
Squeezing them tight
The future generations face our mistakes
They will never know about our rivers, oceans, and lakes
Dark, murky waters too polluted to swim in
Did we realize what we ruined?
Finally humans start to realize
But is it too late to apologize?
Reflection
I chose to write a poem because I felt that it was the best way to convey the emotions I had about the topic. I wanted to show that if humans don't act now, the people that come after us will never see the beauty of the ocean for themselves. They will be left to clean up the mess we made just because we were too concerned with our the convenience of own lives and making money. The creatures of the sea inspired me to write this poem because they are so unique and special. I believe that children of the future should be given the chance to experience the wonder of learning about these animals. In my poem, I gave views about the ocean from the past, present and future. I started with before plastic was widely used, and the ocean was pure. I switched to the waters being polluted from garbage, which is what is happening in our world today. Finally, I wrote about the future, when humans will realize the negative impact they have had on the environment, and will want to make a change. My poem means to me that humans need to be careful about their actions, because if we don't, it might be too late.
