A Beacon of Hope

Reflection
In creating this piece, I wanted to emphasize the duality of humanity as represented by the dual nature of lighthouses. Not only are they seen as warnings to the dangers faced below them, but they are also seen as beacons of hope to weary sailors that land is near. Much like these towering structures, humanity plays an integral role in the crises that plague our oceans while also holding the key to restoring the ocean back to its previous state of unadulterated beauty. Inspired by Desmond Tutu’s quote, “hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness,” I wished to convey the negative consequences of humanity through the dark background, whilst also portraying humanity as the bringer of hope, depicted through the ambiguous group of people aiding each other to shine light on the situation, creating a restored ocean of beauty. Furthermore, the message I wish to convey with this piece is not only that there is hope despite all the atrocities committed, but that hope can only be achieved by coming together as a community and working towards this common goal despite the seemingly overbearing darkness.
