The black pen drawing I created, “A Rising Climate," focuses on the role of youth in protesting the ever-evolving climate change crisis. This piece was inspired by my own experience attending a climate change rally, and the strong sense of solidarity and youthful energy I felt from my fellow attendees. The signs featured in this piece are examples of some of the many different messages and visuals I saw at my own rally. In my artwork I wanted to showcase a “tide” of people marching forward as a rising wave of ocean life crests behind them. I chose to include an abundance of sea life, including whales, coral, and sea turtles, to highlight the many ocean species being affected by climate change. This composition is meant to symbolize how this crisis is transforming from not only an environmental one, but into a human one as well. In order for real action to be taken, humanity must recognize and take responsibility for the harm our malpractices have caused both to the environment, and our own well being. With the creation of this artwork, I ultimately hope to reflect the transforming mindsets of the younger generation, as we turn from futile acceptance of climate change, to hopeful resilience and empowerment for future change.
