A Sustainable Christmas

Santa I know I’ve been bad this year
But please don’t give me coal
I’d rather have nothing at all
And save the North Pole
The polar bears need homes
And the reindeer, too
Fossil fuel emissions are hurting the earth
So I’m putting my trust in you
Trust to save the earth we love
Trust to save the ozone layer above
Help me stop the rising heat
Help me because this is no easy feat
The sea levels are rising fast
The damage done has been vast
The fish need us to save their home
So I hope you will help after reading this poem
Overfishing is stealing all the fish
We are taking more than we need
Too many people are fishing commercially
There are too many mouths to feed
The methods of fishing are harmful, too
We are the reason coral goes turns white from blue
Bottom trawling destroys the ocean floor
We need to stop taking what we need and then taking more
My friends are misinformed and do not understand
They don’t believe the climate crisis that is at hand
I try to tell them it’s proven by studies
Climate change is getting in between me and my buddies
Its causing problems in every way
And getting worse from day to day
Our beautiful earth is not here to stay
Over the years the sea has started to decay
Our oceans are dying thanks to us
You can help simply by riding the bus
That’s one less car releasing fumes
Turn off the lights in vacant rooms
Maybe then the coral will stay colored
Maybe then the ice will stay cold
These changes have already started
So disbelief in climate change is getting old
Santa for Christmas I want a clean earth
That is the gift with the most worth
And make sure your sleigh’s emissions are low
When you fly over the ocean. please pick up trash as you go
Reflection
I was inspired by personal experiences and seeing the ocean change first-hand. Through this project, I have learned how serious the topic of climate change is. I hoped to create a poem with an easy-to-understand message; I used rhymes to make the poem fun to read and used basic topics so that people can get the important information out of it.
