H
Act Local, Think Global
Hannah Nguyen
Sylmar, CA
2020, Senior, Performing Arts

Verse 1
In the ocean, everywhere we look
Colors fading, burnings all it took
Humans never glance behind
After they have mined
So the air and the oceans left to pay the price

Verse 2
CO2 releases, more dissolves
Increase acidity, buffer tends to fall
We’ve been doing
To save us all
Now it’s time to give life to every creature big or small

Chorus
We’ve got to
Conserve, our resources and energy
Reduce, our footprint on the world
Inspire, initiative to change
Act Local and let’s Think Global

[Repeat V1, V2, and Chorus]

Bridge
Oh Oh Oh Start conserving
Oh Oh Oh Be efficient
Oh Oh Oh Stop emissions
Take a sustainable position
Oh Oh Oh Do your part now
Oh Oh Yeah it makes a difference
Oh Oh Oh Spread the hope
Together we can save the earth

Chorus
We’ve got to
Conserve, our resources and energy
Reduce, our footprint on the world
Inspire, initiative to change
Act Local and let’s Think Global

Reflection
Reflection

Since music is a powerful medium that people turn to for inspiration and hope, my song will influence people to take individual action by reducing their carbon footprint to help create a positive global impact. During the process of developing my own music and lyrics, I drew inspiration from the book "Living in the Environment" and the "Chasing Coral" documentary. Reading and watching about how climate change, increased by human activities, largely impacts the ocean ecosystems and stability filled me with sorrow because aquatic organisms are paying the price for human overuse and combustion. Yet, watching how corals bleach from increased temperatures, organisms are unable to form carbonate shells due to increased acidity, and the pH of ocean waters are changing because of more CO2 dissolving, sparked my motivation to make a difference and advocate for humans to shift their mindset toward conservation and sustainability. I will begin to apply what I have learned by unplugging appliances when they aren’t in use, turning to public transportation, recycling, reusing materials, and monitoring my water and energy usage. I want my audience to understand that their daily activities largely impact the environment. Thus, we should conserve resources, only use energy when it's absolutely necessary, and utilize appliances with efficiency because it will create a positive effect on the environment. I am hopeful that if every individual adopts the idea of being sustainable through daily actions, that humans can help reduce climate change and its negative impact on the oceans.
