Reflection

Improper waste disposal and other human activities are contributing causes to water pollution. In seemingly small amounts each time, waste is poured into the ocean. Unconsciously, these individual pieces of trash and debris accumulate, largely polluting bodies of water without even noticing, as if we did not even perceive this gradual passage of time. Each tiny piece of trash adrift in the ocean is a result of our actions and is one additional problem that we have to solve, but often helpless to solve when we stand in front of it. Inspired by the idea of depicting the accumulation of trash throughout time, I included a clock in the middle of the ocean, accompanying pieces of trash, to emphasize the importance of immediate action we have to take together to combat this environmental issue. Through exploring the contest theme, I learned how crucial and how effective raising public awareness and educating people about the sources, impacts, and solutions of water pollution can be. My message to the viewers is my call for immediate action toward reducing water pollution. Substantial changes can be achieved with the collection of individual actions, such as decreasing plastic consumption or properly disposing hazardous waste. I utilized watercolor initially and eventually switched to digital art using photoshop in order to better polish the details. I chose to complete the art piece digitally, since it is a modern form of art that can be easily spread to a wide audience, fulfilling my goal to spread public awareness. I have created various artworks using both watercolor and digital art previously. I especially enjoyed the process of creating this piece -- the power of creativity is capable of addressing current issues and raise awareness for climate change in a different approach compared with writings and documentaries. The visual component provides a straightforward and striking impact to the audience.
