Reflection
Reflection

I live surrounded by a stunning array of birds. On any given day you might see up to five bald eagles circling overhead or see four different species of woodpecker at our bird feeder. Birds are adaptable. Our whole world is resilient. But neither of them are invincible. Over 400 bird species in North America alone will face the threat of extinction if the climate continues to rise even just a few degrees. Loss of habitat, disease, drought, fire, and rising sea levels are all issues stemming from climate change that are forcing birds to adapt past their limits. This was first brought to my attention during a talk given by Birds Connect Seattle, formerly the Seattle Audubon Society, prefacing a choral concert. I first heard the song I used for this dance at that choral performance. This song struck the chord within me where I could effortlessly visualize choreography to the sound. It was unusual and impossible to count, but capturing the feelings I wanted to convey. The words say how birds have always found a home, but the melody is almost mournful. Dance has always been the easiest way to express my thoughts and feelings. I feel we need to realize that climate change affects the little things as well.
