After learning about changes in movement and migration patterns of marine species in response to climate change, I became especially concerned with polar bears and other marine species. While most species, such as killer whales, have started living closer to the poles in search of cooler waters, arctic species have nowhere cooler left to turn to. Coupled with habitat loss and melting ice, the condition of these species is especially disheartening. The critical condition of polar bears in particular inspired me to create a piece that highlights the rising ocean temperatures, as well as the species it affects -- namely, bears, narwhals, and other whales. However, the issue of a warming Arctic seems distant and unimportant to most; as such, I believe the first step in the right direction to combating this issue is spreading awareness. I hope that with continued efforts to publicly raise awareness for this “Arctic fever” with more graphics and art, more people will give this issue its due respect and donate a little extra pocket money here and there to charities supporting these issues--- in order to save our arctic animals, as well as our oceans as a whole.
