Ballade of Oil Spills
Irvine, California
2016, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word
Humanity dwells in polluted slumber,
Dreaming in a paradise, unconscious
But reality, the fitful night of umber
Is stained in films of oil- poisonous
Innocent species none but curious
Smother in oil and meet their fate
If we could only awaken, instantaneous
Before it is too late?
Today we live in oblivious detriment
From humanity, oil is leaking
Wreaking havoc on the marine environment
In heavy oils, fur and feathers are bonding;
Birds and otters dying
In light oils, toxins leave animals in dire straits;
Throwing ecosystems into turmoil
Before it is too late?
Lucid sparks in the slumbering Leviathan;
Advocates spreading the flame of erudition
To save Oceanus, the poisoned Titan.
We must be the Prometheus of our generation,
Fanning the fiery spark of awareness and information
Into a maelstrom of fire, to obliterate
The raging current of pollution,
Before it is too late?
Reader, spread the spark of erudition
Unleash your ocean advocate innate
Prevent the tide of pollution
Before it is too late?
Reflection
The first stanza explains how society sometimes is too preoccupied in their fun and games to really address the danger of oil spills killing innocents. The second stanza is about how Nature is really taking the brunt of the damage that oil spills cause. Heavy oils are the main cause for gluing together fur and feathers. Without an insulating coat, many animals will die, especially birds and otters. Light oils are more toxic, and when they are consumed, ecosystems are endangered. The third stanza addresses ocean advocacy. It highlights how ocean advocacy will perhaps alleviate the crisis, drawing the attention of the public so something will be done. Also, many metaphors are used. The Leviathan mentioned represents society, is also a famous metaphor that Thomas Hobbes used in the book he wrote, (the book is about a giant/Leviathan that represents society), explaining his theory for the absolute rule of kings. Also, another metaphor used is Oceanus and Prometheus. Oceanus is the Titan of the sea, who fittingly represents the ocean. Prometheus is the Titan that brought fire to mankind, advancing them above all other species. In a way, ocean advocates enlighten mankind; their spark of awareness alerts society to the ocean pollution crisis. The final stanza, or the envoy urges the reader to become an ocean advocate and further prevent oil spills.
