I designed my artwork to look like the yin and yang symbol: yin is dark and in the north, whereas yang is light and in the south. I designed it this way not only for aesthetic reasons, but for the meaning behind this symbol. According to Ancient History Encyclopedia, “... the ever-changing relationship between the two poles is responsible for the constant flux of the universe and life in general. When there is too great an imbalance between Yin and Yang, catastrophes can occur such as floods, droughts and plagues.” This quote reminded me of climate change. There is an imbalance in the world so there are catastrophes that are caused by climate change like extreme weather, as mentioned in the quote, and death. I named my piece “Cause and Effect” because the darker side represents human causes of climate change, like power plants, cars, fossil fuels, and deforestation, and the lighter side represents the effects of the causes, like coral bleaching, death of sea life, and melting of polar ice. Amidst all this chaos and despair, the core of the world represents hope and change for a better world. People are collecting trash from beaches to minimize the threats faced by oceans. This cause has created a beautiful effect: the ocean is vibrant and thriving. When I read about and saw pictures of how climate change has damaged the ocean, I felt disappointed that I, as just one person, can’t do much to help the ocean and reverse the effects of what millions of people have caused. But I hope my artwork will inspire people to create a good cause and effect for the oceans and the world.
