For my piece, I found the temperature recorded in Boston, Massachusetts on April 16 for the past 75 years. Then I found the predicted temperatures for the next 75 years if we make no change to how we are living and our impact on the environment. I made each temperature correspond with a different note. The higher the temperature, the higher the note. One note in the song represents one year. For the final part of the song, with the same two notes that start quickly before slowing down into the final note, it represents what is likely to happen if we made an extreme change or zero-emissions beginning immediately - a better future with lower and more consistent temperatures. The timing throughout the piece is not related to the temperature, so I had more room to be creative there. While researching past temperatures and predictions for Massachusetts, it quickly became obvious that temperatures have been rising throughout the past 75 years, with a steep incline as the years draw closer to 2020. Those numbers keep climbing at a rapid rate if we make no changes to how we are affecting the environment. That scared me, and inspired me to keep looking for ways to help the environment and our oceans.
