Reflection
Living in the bay area, going to the beach every so often is a privilege I have - being able to enjoy and experience our natural environment all seasons of the year. Nature deeply inspires me, and I wanted to create an image that reflects on the dissonance of rapid climate change. Research even shows that impressionist artists of the past (like Monet) could have observed smog in the air and it's had an impact on their art. The environment is changing rapidly for the worse, many artists are aware of that and reflecting on it. Beaches are known for warm weather and splashing waves, so going to the beach to find a natural skating rink may confuse some people. Climate change is much more complex than some may think, the weather isn't just getting hotter, in some areas it's becoming inhospitable and colder not only for humans but for animals, we'll be forced to rapidly adapt our lifestyles while those unable to adapt will die (and perhaps get washed up on the shore). All forms of life will be affected, especially those in the ocean. Perhaps we won't be able to enjoy sunsets on the beach anymore with all the smog in the air. Being aware of my individual actions and encouraging others, donating to fundraisers, raising awareness by speaking out and participating in Earth Day events, are all ways I and many others can combat climate change. Although the setting portrayed here may look dystopian, it could be our future, and it's one I want to avoid.
