Reflection

This piece is inspired by the growing popularity of generative AI, especially AI generated images, and how it impacts the environment. I took inspiration from different Studio Ghibli films such as Princess Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky, mimicking their creative takes on how human industrilization affects the natural world negatively. I used watercolor for the background and foliage, using the medium’s reliance on water to reflect the way ecosystems also rely on water to function, and its transparent colors to represent nature’s light and gentle beauty. I used guache for the robot, a medium I was completely unfamiliar with, just like how new and refreshing artificial intelligence has proven to be for people. The opaque and desaturated colors of guache is meant to contrast the colorful and whimsical tone of the backgrounds. Gel pens are used for the neon liquid leaking from the giant robot, inspired by the anti-AI art watermarks people would use to stop their art from being taken by AI. They are meant to symbolize how AI is taking from the creative industry, all the while polluting the environment with the energy they’re using. The growing amount of people who claim to be “AI artists” threatens to destroy the history of creativity and artistry humans developed, not to mention the use of artificial intelligence is becoming more and more of a strain on Earth’s natural resources, and it’s contributing to major problems like global warming and ocean pollutions. I wish to use my piece as a message; A warning to everyone about the harm of AI that far outweighs the benefits.
