Coral SOS: A Digital Call for Help

Project Description: Coral SOS is a digital website I created to raise awareness about coral reef degradation and inspire meaningful action. The site combines scientific information, environmental storytelling, and visual media to help visitors understand the causes of coral reef decline—such as ocean acidification, warming, and pollution—and how small everyday choices can make a difference. Through original research, visuals, and interactive elements like a quiz and video concept, Coral SOS aims to make complex ocean issues more accessible and engaging. The website invites users to not only learn about the crisis but also explore simple, practical ways they can contribute to coral reef conservation in their daily lives. This project reflects both my passion for technology and my deep, personal connection to the ocean, formed through past snorkeling trips and environmental studies. By building a digital platform, I hope to show how innovation and education can work together to protect nature—especially in a time when climate and ocean health are so closely connected. Coral SOS is more than a website—it’s a call to action. My goal is to help people recognize that even the smallest actions can have ripple effects, and that everyone has a role to play in protecting our shared planet.

For this contest, I created a website called Coral SOS to explore my personal connection to the ocean and raise awareness about coral reef degradation and ocean conservation. I’ve always been passionate about technology, and this was the first time I brought that passion into a fully built website. Throughout the process, I had a lot of fun blending scientific knowledge with creative communication. In my project, I combined facts about coral reef ecosystems, environmental threats like ocean acidification and warming, and actions people can take to help. I also incorporated original footage from my past snorkeling experiences — moments that first sparked my connection, my sense of wonder, and responsibility toward the ocean. Through this process, I’ve also learned how deeply interconnected environmental problems are. A seemingly small action — like using the wrong sunscreen or releasing excess CO₂ — can ripple outward and damage entire ecosystems. It showed me how everyday choices matter, and how small acts of awareness or kindness toward nature can add up. I hope my website gets people to reflect on their daily actions and choices — and maybe even to take steps, no matter how small it is, toward protecting reefs and our planet. My message is simple: Earth is our only home. What we do now decides what kind of future we’ll live in.
