Climate Hero: Gator Halpern and Sam Teicher, Coral Vita

Crocheted corals in various colors, including beige, gray, red, and blue, arranged on a black surface against a white wall.

Reflection

Due to human impact, coral reefs have endured a great downfall. Without coral reefs, the ocean would not be what it is today. Its delicate ecosystem relies heavily on reefs as a source of protection, habitat, and food for many sea creatures. Throughout the years, coral reefs have deteriorated, posing a demanding issue for the health of our ocean. Various companies are working towards restoring our reefs, but one, in particular, has had a significant impact. Coral Vita is a company that grows coral in special labs on land and then transfers the coral into the ocean. From there, corals can flourish and thrive. They have figured out ways to grow coral 50 times faster than any other company, and have grown coral resilient to the changing environment of our oceans. After hearing about their work, I was incredibly inspired by their ability to take technology and science and use it to help solve a seemingly unfixable issue. I have always dreamed of seeing the coral reefs in their prime. This is why I wish to spread awareness for our ocean's health and support those trying their hardest to save it. The final product can be interpreted in two ways: the dead coral slowly consuming the healthy coral, or the vibrant coral slowly growing back from nothing. With my positive outlook for the future, I want to emphasize the little time we have left to save the reefs. Will the work done by humanity be enough to save the coral before it's too late?
