Dreaming of a Brighter Future

Project Description: My submission is a digital comic that combines the categories of prose and visual art. It features a story I wrote in the perspective of the ocean personified, with drawings to provide a visual representation of the plot.

An ocean scene contrasts vibrant past with dull present, showing coral bleaching and pollution effects. A mermaid looks sad amidst degraded ocean life and fossil fuel plants.

Comic illustrating ocean acidification: fish and marine life in water, thermometer showing rising temperatures, human and fish dialogue, arrows indicating pH changes, and impact on shelled animals.

Sequential illustration depicting marine life challenges: oyster and urchin larvae, a struggling sea turtle, text pondering an imminent end, and a hopeful image of a snorkeler observing the ocean.

A person speaks to a crowd about ocean conservation. People learn about reducing plastic use and volunteer opportunities. A tree grows, highlighted by the sun.

Cartoon: People discuss climate change on a beach. Images show a wind farm, a bleak ocean, and a sunset, with text expressing hope for environmental restoration.

Reflection

I wanted to create an art piece that expressed the hardships of the ocean due to our effect, but also informs how and what we can do to change our ways. Additionally, I wanted my work to appeal to younger audiences because they are the next generation that will carry on the hopes of spreading awareness of the ocean’s drastic conditions due to climate change. Therefore, I decided to create a digital comic that combines words and drawings to convey both a written and visual representation of my message that hope for the ocean begins with our actions. I included solutions on a small scale, such as saving energy by turning off the lights when not needed, to highlight how everyone can support the cause, as well as a larger scale solution of wind energy that can greatly reduce the amount of carbon emissions that amplify the greenhouse gas effect. After conducting the research on this topic and creating this digital comic, I want to take action by continuing to make digital comics about the ocean published on the internet to reach global audiences, in order to spread awareness of this timely issue.
