Drip
Anika Ramaswamy
Walnut Creek, CA
2019, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word

Glaciers
deliquescing in the blazing golden sun,
like an ice cream cone plummeting away.

Water
scurrying hastily down the jagged planes,
an open faucet drooling continuously all day.

Drip
oceans rise,
iridescent ice melts,
and temperatures increase.

Destroyed
habitats vanish as wildlife grapples despairingly,
millions of species now gone… extinct forever.

Spreading
dangerous dioxide drifts, dancing daringly,
caused by steaming fumes from zooming vehicles.

Drip
descending gradually,
as puddles appear,
new spots of misery.

Reflection

“There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate” (Obama). Shrinking glaciers, rising temperatures, higher sea levels, changes in natural animal habitats: the list of the effects of climate change and global warming go on and on. Climate change is a global problem that affects not only humans but all living species and their homes. I created the poem “Drip” because I wanted to draw attention to the harm climate change has done and will do to our planet in the future. Due to greenhouse gases produced by our daily human activities, the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have risen dramatically to a very unhealthy point and the highest they have ever been. Recently in the news, there have been advocates of fixing climate change, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with her idea of the Green New Deal. Though there is controversy around it, it is inspiring to see plans like the Green New Deal emerging to fight climate change, since there has been little to no government action in this field. My family and I have been becoming more environmentally friendly in our daily lives, such as increasing our use of public transport, recycling, limiting waste, and reducing energy and water usage. Hopefully, our generation can collaboratively work toward a greener and safer world for everyone.
