Reflection

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that." Inspired by this quote from Martin Luther King Jr, I established contrast between darkness and brightness in this painting as a representation of the contrast between reality and hope in ocean awareness. I chose human feet to depict such contrasts because feet are essential in supporting our bodies, helping us stand and enabling us to walk upright, unlike animals. However, what we have done as humans to the environment is destructive. In the past decades, industrialization and other human developments have led to severe environmental problems, such as climate change and ocean pollution, leaving the planet wounded, as depicted by the dark and broken bones in the left foot, a bloodshot eye, and a bleeding nail; trash and polluting factories are damaging the foot, the body, and the planet. On the other hand, I still believe that we are able to make the world a better place with our collective efforts. As can be seen from the right foot, the huge wound resulted from climate change is gradually healed by the suture. The dark blood becomes brighter through the healing process; running down the instep, the blood becomes clear water, making plants and flowers germinate on the foot. This is how we return to nature. Full of vitality, the clear water scatters the sewage away. I believe that we still have hope to make our planet better. Therefore, we should be more aware of our wound, sew it up, and transform our wound to beautiful skin to retrieve our beautiful nature.
