Climate Hero: Natsai Audrey Chieza, Faber Futures
Reflection

Natsai Audrey Chieza is the CEO of Faber Futures. Faber Futures makes textiles with bacteria to help reduce the amount of water being used for leather dyes. Learning more about fashion and how fabric and textures are made, I learned that there is an absurd amount of dyed water being put back into the ocean which affects not only sea-life, but also humans. The amount of dye used can be reduced if we make more fabrics with bacteria. Additionally, fast fashion has impacted the amount of waste in the water, as it is not sustainable and thrown away quickly. The result of clothes being thrown out has impacted the ocean’s conditions. The water is much filthier, and when you go to the ocean near Bangladesh or China, where you see so much litter and waste, you are unable to see any wildlife. Through my artwork, I want to show how much dyes and clothes affect our ecosystem. As the dyed water is poured into oceans, the dyes from clothes start seeping out, making the water more polluted than it already was. Animals are unable to be seen due to the amount of clothing there is. It also shows animals inevitably wearing clothing that has been dumped into the ocean, searching for places where they can stay, as their homes have been obstructed by pollution. This leads to a decrease in biodiversity and affects the food chain, affecting the other wildlife in the ocean, and eventually affecting humans as well. The Ocean Awareness Contest allowed me to see the amount of people willing to help the world we live in. Therefore, Climate Hero’s efforts allow me to be more hopeful of the future. It lets me know that people are making an effort to live in a better society, and even if it’s little, I should make an effort as well.
