Everlasting Winter

choking
silently, unheard
the tiny creatures die
their throats close
and die
one by one they fall
algae leave our beautiful marine rainbows
making an everlasting underwater winter
the cycle grows and we fall deeper into our doom
plastic bags eat fish alive
invasive lionfish kill their peers in the seas
oil seeps into ecosystems and destroys them
climate change stresses coral
we grab creatures and scrape the ground with nets
oceans are acidifying and life is ending
but we can stop all of this
if we swallow our pride
and have empathy outside our own race
outside our own time
and look at our children
and grandchildren
and the next generation of crabs, clams, kelp, everything
and work to preserve the few things that we do have
or we will lose everything
we don’t want the next race to see us as we are now
we want them to see us
for saving the planet from the mess we created- it is our duty, together.

Reflection
My poem shows many aspects of ocean pollution and some of the human-induced problems concerning it, such as coral bleaching and ocean acidification. I believe that we have a duty and a responsibility to fix the mess we have created in not just the ocean, but everywhere on Earth. People often don’t realize that their daily routines might have a huge effect on the oceans, like unknowingly purchasing fish from a fishing company that uses unethical fishing techniques. There are so many ways we can reduce what we are doing - and we want our planet to be ready for our children and theirs and so on to inherit, right?
