Climate Hero: Ali Tabrizi
Reflection
Reflection

"Eye to Eye" explores the irony in the modern relationship between humans and fish. While humans originated from fish, we are currently jeopardizing their habitat through practices such as overfishing and marine pollution. The evolutionary connection between the two species is portrayed in through the depiction of a fish with a human eye and a human with a fish eye. Furthermore, the piece raises questions about the consequences of oceanic destruction through a hook placed between the two figures, leaving it uncertain who will suffer the effects: a thriving and functional ocean is crucial for both marine and human life. The background net that encloses both figures symbolizes the all-encompassing and inescapable climate crisis. The inspiration for this artwork stems largely from Seaspiracy, a Netflix Original documentary. This film sheds light on the extensive damage inflicted by humans on the ocean and aquatic life. It exposes various problematic aspects of the commercial fishing industry, including the harm caused to marine animals as unintended "bycatch,” the excessive disposal of nets and other plastic waste, and other factors that culminate in severe ecological damage. The filmmaker behind Seaspiracy, Ali Tabrizi, impressed me with his dedication to showcasing the true state of the oceans. Driven by his fascination with the ocean from a young age, Tabrizi initially intended to capture its wildlife and other remarkable sights in his documentary. However, upon realizing that the ocean is far from the pristine habitats depicted in most nature films, he chose to take the documentary in a different direction: one that unveiled harsh truths and an urgent need for change. Although Tabrizi has been met with significant criticism for bringing these issues to light, his commitment has also made him a leading activist for the ocean conservation movement. Today, he remains dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and inspiring countless individuals, including myself, to actively work for the cause.
