The idea for my piece “From Our Roots” came to me while I was sketching people in various poses and perspectives. One person in particular had arms reaching towards the sky that resembled tree branches. Thus, inspiring the concept of a human tree, which became the central theme of my artwork. Throughout this process and while reflecting on the contest's theme, "Connections to Nature: Looking Inside, Going Outside", I have come to better understand how deeply humans are connected to nature from our roots to our leaves; from childhood to adulthood. My piece expresses the idea that just as trees grow roots, branches and leaves, humans create art and are part of the natural world. The patterns in the tree represent this shared expression. In the end, perhaps we are not so distant from nature, and that realization reminds us of our responsibility to protect and care for the world around us.
