Our “Future Oceans” refers to the oceans that we will care for and conserve. As an ocean lover and Puerto Rico resident, I’ve always wanted to know how to protect the beautiful oceans that surround me. I wanted to express not only what is occurring to the oceans because of climate change and pollution but also express what we can do about it. The film focuses on marine ecosystems such as the ocean, coral reefs, and coastal/marine species. I created it by drawing and painting illustrations used as a green-screen and made them interact with each other to produce animation. I filmed in six different beaches on the islands of Puerto Rico and Culebra. Over 1,000 photos were taken for stop-motion animation over which a few short clips were used to symbolize the essay components. I was inspired to write an essay that was simple to understand and organize as a tree with a core, roots, and branches. It includes a motivating essay with practical applications for any viewer worldwide. As an optimist, I believe that we can make a change in how we care for our oceans through education, commitment, and conservation. Every time I go to the beach, I’ll be leaving it a little bit cleaner and spread the word to promote awareness and love for the oceans. We can make changes in our everyday lives through recycling, reusing, and avoiding single-use plastics. These are some of the steps that will demonstrate our love towards our FUTURE OCEANS.
