Reflection
The artwork “Gangnam station” illustrates the results of climate change and what human species might experience in the future because of it. This artwork raises awareness by amalgamating the concepts of waste mitigation, weather disasters, and the repercussions that humans will undergo, which are induced by climate change. As you can see in the artwork, the people in the subway are agonized by the discomfort that they are confronting, and the fact that those pain are caused by climate change emphasizes the climate calamity that we are going through. This work was inspired by the climate disaster that I personally experienced, which happened in South Korea, in the summer of 2023. Specifically in Gangnam, the big flood happened that was induced by abnormal climate, and one of the moments that I can not forget is a subway that passed the inundated Gangnam station. I was a passenger on that subway, and by recollecting the memory, I remember that the subway was passing the sinking station at slow speed, so that I can see all the detailed situation of what's happening. It was total chaos, people were screaming and scared by it. I was traumatized and shocked by the fact that climate change can directly impact humans' lives. Before the incident, I only thought that the climate catastrophes were exaggerated, which has a low probability of happening in real life. However, now I perceive climate change as a very serious problem that human species are dealing with. In my opinion, it can have a huge impact on an individual's life and, by extension, the existence of humans. Therefore, I draw this artwork to share my experience in a more dramatic way and give an idea of the seriousness of climate change. I had a strong desire to recreate the terrifying happening that I experienced in art, which I believe as another type of language where people can communicate their emotions and feelings. I hope this artwork can evoke the emotion of sadness and also feel my desperation to save the environment. If we don’t take any action to overcome this situation, we might suffer from the discomfort that I described in artwork daily. In conclusion, I think as a teenager artist, we should be engaging in climate change issues more enthusiastically so that young children and governments can also have an interest in this topic.
