I recall having a tiny goldfish that surprisingly lived for three years in our huge but empty tank when I was in elementary school. We always wanted a bigger pet but couldn’t afford anything other than a small goldfish. Because this was my first encounter with fish I decided to research on them to trigger childhood memories, only to find out that they are considered an invasive species in Ontario. I always thought that goldfish were very fragile and short living but research taught me that they are tolerant of poor water quality and are able to produce large populations. I was completely shocked to see how huge they can grow to be compared to the three inches long goldfish that I had as a pet.
I decided to concentrate my composition on goldfish to bring awareness to all owners and pet stores of the dangers of throwing out seemingly harmless fish into any body of water. To draw attention while triggering a reaction from the audience, I enlarged the eye of the goldfish in my piece. The contrast between the warm toned fish and the cool toned background was intentionally created to bring a bold statement with high contrast. I hope to bring a change to the ignorant human actions that hurt the ecosystem by using my loud and vibrant color pencil drawing.
