Climate Hero: Haenyeo
Reflection

As a high school student living in Jeju island, I have witnessed the extent of ocean pollution and have been interested in how we might be able to bring back the clean ocean. During my research on the climate heroes, I learned about a group of female divers called “Haenyeo” who make a living by harvesting seafood from the ocean. I have learned that these Haenyeos often dive into the sea to collect underwater trash like abandoned nets and plastic disposable objects to protect their ocean which is closely related to their living. I wanted to make an artwork that bring inspiration to my audience by telling the story of these local climate heroes. As a neighbor of these Haenyeo divers, I wanted to celebrate their way of living together with the sea.
