Reflection
Everyday, I awaken to new headlines, all repeating the same sentiment: the ocean is dying. We have polluted the water, hunted countless species to near-extinction, and all but upended our marine ecosystem. Yet we cannot survive without a healthy ocean. While researching more about the ocean, I learned that it produces over half of the oxygen we breathe and absorbs fifty times more CO2 than the atmosphere. To me, it seemed like the ocean was our heart—an organ we could not live without. Through this painting, I sought to visualize the life-giving power of the ocean and its indelible ties to each and every one of our lives. This creative medium allowed me to more directly deliver my message to viewers and provoke genuine thought. Ultimately, I hope to inspire viewers to take action. Just like the ocean sustains us, we must strive to sustain it.
