Holacanthus bermudensis
Eva Duarte
Pembroke Pines, FL
2024, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word

I am Holacanthus bermudensis,
Abeautiful, delicate creature.
Losing my home, with nowhere to go,
Would anyone care to help me?
Does anyone know?
Myhomeis slowly dying,
And I am losing my friends.
Sea turtles grow crisp in the sun,
Some never make it back to the sea.
Nowthat I am closer than ever,
I see you chop down our trees,
I see you pollute the ocean and the air
I hate to hear your lies,
The stuff you say everyday,
Saying everything will be ok.
Do you know I’ve lost my way?
Even though I am safe for now,
What will become of me in future?
I don’t want to share
The same fate as those I see on my travels.
Like me, they don’t need to suffer.
I am the Bermuda blue angelfish,
Areminder of those who lost their way.

Reflection
Reflection

On one of my many trips to the beach, I saw a beautiful family of fish. The fish were so close that I could touch them. Thinking about what to do for this project, I went back to this memory and wondered where the fish are now. I thought about how marine species are suffering and put that in the point of view of a fish. It’s very sad thinking about how this affects other organisms. This poem is supposed to bring attention towards the effects of climate change mirrors some common responses to it. We put so much waste into the air that the ocean has to absorb it and, even though it’s safe for us, we have to acknowledge that it might not be safe for other animals.
