Hope.
I. The ocean is like a little child
Breathing up all of its surroundings
Never getting the chance to ponder about the effects of it
Never once guessing otherwise about its knowledge
Never lest thinking the world is wrong
Never having the chance to speak for itself
Never hearing a voice over unrestricted destruction
Destruction filled with oil, gas, plastics
Garbage of all sorts, perhaps forgotten by its disposers
History has shown how terrible unrestricted change
How harsh change can become
How the best creations can evolve into complete destruction
This is what has become of the innocent ocean
The once beautiful ocean
The once playful ocean
The once energizing ocean
The once jubilant ocean
Ruined.
II. The people are different
People are not voiceless
People are not in despair
People are not breathing up
But breathing out
People can uproot
But root into
People can be calamitous
But can rejuvenate
Hope may be thought of
Reflecting may be thought into
But it is reacting that can change
Possibility.
III. Humanity has what no other can dream of—Possibility
Possibility to end problems
Possibility to rebuild and reimagine
But also, the Possibility to destroy
If used wisely, and skillfully, can recreate a healthier world
A cleaner world
A climate-conscious world
An ocean-conscious world
And most importantly: A caring world
Hope is in the air.
Reflection
Reflection
Even though humanity has slowly been destroying our planet over the last two centuries, the present day feels different than the rest. Today, there is hope. Hope that the younger generations will reimagine our world; hope that they will solve the biggest problems at hand and end the reign of disastrous plastics; hope knowing that if people had the power, possibility, and capability to have partially ruined our world, they can also perform the opposite. This all starts with one person. One person can start a global revolution and remake our world; one person can spark a new candle; one person can open a new door. It all starts with one and ends with everyone. I was inspired to write this poem due to the amount of positive emotion existing today, that we can make the world better. Reading about all the school-aged students doing their part made me want to use my own power of literature to do mine. My hope for readers is that they will become active global citizens and change its fate—one person at a time. The time has come for humanity to open a new chapter. What can you do to help?
