Reflection

My creative process for Hope in Blue is deeply rooted in a desire to rebel against the overwhelming culture of toxic productivity, self-centeredness, and environmental carelessness that permeates Silicon Valley. Instead of illustrating the catastrophic impacts of climate change, I aimed to depict the serenity and vitality of a healthy ocean to spark appreciation and action. Inspired by the soothing sounds of waves, the deep blue hues of water, and the comforting texture of warm sand, I experimented with yarn, recycled fabric, ribbons, and beads to recreate the ocean’s textures. The process of making this dress felt like a form of restoration—each stitch grounding me in the wisdom and calmness of the sea. Fashion, unlike static forms of art, offers a unique intimacy. It moves with the body, wraps around the self. In this way, Hope in Blue becomes wearable nature—offering not only aesthetic comfort, but also a daily, visible statement: that we are a part of nature, not apart from it. Through the theme Connections to Nature: Looking Inside, Going Outside, I discovered profound parallels between human emotion and the ocean’s depth. Water inspires me because it adapts without losing its essence. In the face of climate change and instability, we, too, must be fluid and resilient, yet grounded in our values. Water can nourish a flower with a droplet or carve through mountains with its force, just like our capacity for both gentle care and powerful change. By embodying the ocean’s wisdom in a garment, I hope to transform environmental concern into personal connection—turning sustainability into something one can wear, feel, and remember. My goal is to help others see that safeguarding the planet isn’t just a distant obligation—it’s an everyday choice we carry with us.
