Reflection

I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and visit every summer. Living in a harbor town and seeing the way rising water levels directly impacts everyone and everything there, particularly disadvantaged parts of the community, has been very surreal. When I broaden that scope and look out at the world around me, I find myself very discouraged. People are suffering, and despite promises and best efforts I can see no tangible change. Why is that? A big part of my poem and the artwork that accompanies it is my frustration with everyone who could be doing something yet chooses not to. I hope my work will be able to properly convey my feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, while also communicating the enduring hope I have for our species, because I know human-kind is fundamentally good.
