How to Save Right Whales
Shane Leslie
Billerica, MA
2019 Right Whales, Junior, Art (2014 – 2023)

Hand-drawn image of a smiling blue whale with a unicorn horn and a donut-shaped bubble above its eye, swimming in blue water.     Child's drawing of a polluted ocean scene with a fish, plastic waste, a stop sign, scissors, and a sinking ship against a bright sky.

Reflection

My artwork is showing several problems that affect right whales, like noise pollution, boat collisions, entanglements, and plastic pollution. This piece shows unrealistic but fun ways to save right whales, like earmuffs for the noise pollution, giant scissors to cut the entanglements, a stop sign to stop the boat from hurting the whale, and finally a "helping hand" grabber to pick up the plastic and trash. I created this piece of art to inspire others to find more realistic ways to help save right whales like beach clean-ups or raising awareness. I feel really unhappy that this is what our ocean is turning into, and that we are the cause of the right whales and other marine life dying.
