Reflection
Inspiration for my work came very naturally from my life and my surroundings, since I grew up on the Korean island of Jeju. The ocean has always been a significant part of my life, and my water story began at a very young age, especially since my mom is a certified, professional diver. My interest in the health of the oceans had already been growing, and this contest was a great opportunity for me to take a more focused look at those concerns. I wanted to create a piece that was informative and that would also capture the beauty of Jeju, so I decided that a video format would best serve this purpose. Taking the time to research upcycling, business influence, and glass bottle waste was informative in its own right, but the entire creative process was enlightening as well. Filming different parts of Jeju and editing footage made me realize the value of the environment: there is so much to protect. Not only is the health of water important because of how central it is to everyday life, but its health is key to preserving the land where I grew up. As I felt a growing sense of urgency while putting together this project, it became more and more important that I capture the natural beauty of Jeju. Although Jeju is just one small island in a vast world, I wanted to make it clear that issues of climate change have direct effects on specific places and water stories. In the end, I wanted viewers to walk away with two understandings--the beauty of healthy oceans and the need for a call to action. I also plan to respond to these messages and will continue researching and exploring. While it is important to stay active in these pursuits, I will also actively enjoy the pleasures that water affords us, diving and swimming, so as to remind myself of what it is that I am trying to protect.
