Invisible Contamination

Reflection

I participated in this competition to enlighten people how serious the nuclear contamination is affecting our ocean. I chose this topic since I believed that people do not acknowledge what kind of effects it would eventually have on our future. Since nuclear waste is not visible, most of the people deny how it is affecting to the ocean creatures and our well being in enormous ways. Once radioactive waste contaminates the fish, the waste accumulates in its body and eventually human would end up consuming it which causes variety cancers. If we do nothing about this issue, soon the whole ocean would be contaminated and even the human race would face extinction. I drew fishes and sea turtle that only have bones without flesh as the main characters to represent that they are contaminated by radiation rooted inside their bones. Radioactive waste barrels on the bottom of the painting show the viewers that the radioactive contamination has been taking its place instead of marine inhabitants. The coral on the left was colored black and white to show that it was killed and lost its beauty by radiation. Also, the background colors are dim to express the dark, gloomy atmosphere created by the nuclear pollution.

My final goal is to spread the awareness of this issue through my visualized artwork, hoping that it could change our future brighter even by one little step. Because I know that all it takes to change the outcome is by a simple awareness.
