Is This the Ocean You Want

Reflection
My inspiration for my artwork came from my research of the effects of plastic on the ocean. Through my research I discovered that there are huge “garbage patches” in oceans. One of the major contributors to ocean pollution is bottled water bottles that are not disposed of properly. This got me thinking that at the rate the world is going the ocean will soon be made up of plastic, instead of all the creatures that live within it. Therefore I wanted to show something that humans are familiar with and love, the beach, but being tainted with bottles crashing onto the shore instead of clear waves.
I created the work in the Adobe program Photoshop. It is made up of a hand drawing inspired by my own source images of the beach and bottled water. The source images make up two of the layers. The opacity was reduced so that the different layers contribute to the artwork. Then the bottles were repeated many times, similar to the pollution problem that we face, to create a separate layer. I added some ocean foam around the bottles and added colour on top of the bottles to show how poisonous the bottles are for the ocean.
The meaning I have made out of my exploration of ocean pollution is that plastic is a very real and large problem that the world faces today and in the future. As the plastic is harmful to animals living in the ocean as well as having a negative impact on humans.
